hi i have a 10 week old border collie and i really want to get started with agility with him!?
now i know your not allowed to jump them or push them too hard until there at the youngest 9 months old.
but i was wondering how i could get him prepared, like the tunnels and weaves they would be alright to start on wouldnt they?
could i use a play tunnel?
10 weeks is way to early to start agility - minimum age for agilty is 6 months of age.
Its important u dont start jumps or any of the higher obstacles like the A-frame or the see-saw. Jumping will cause too much impact on the joints at such a young age, causing him to have severe joint and muscular problems later. The higher obstacles need to be avoideed because a fall from any of them will do untold damage.
There are many things u can start working on. The best thing u can do to help prepare your pup is to take him to a puppy class. You may want t look at that rather soon because the cutoff age is 16 weeks. It will teach your pup all the fundamentals which will help ur success in agilty later 100 times over.
The classes teach your pups social skills and because agility means u are going to be around other dogs, its needed.
Basic commands will be taught - obediance and having the dogs full attention on u is crucial in agilty.
You will probably do alot of desensitizing exercise like walking through tunnels and going through very noisy and distracting mazes.
You can start slowly guiding your pup through the zig zags and tunnels, etc.
Most of all enjoy and keep it fun for both of you.
