Choosing Working Dog Breed

Choosing a breed for first time dog?

I am going to be getting my first dog soon hopefully, and I'm still deciding on breeds. I love American Cocker Spaniels - the silver buff or golden ones, but it's hard to find breeders with those puppies in the UK, I'm also a fan of Siberian Huskies (though before anyone says yes I know they'd be hard work as a first dog, though my Mum has had many Alsations and Dobermans before, so she's got experience with dogs which is a help). But anyway I want to know some cute breeds that I can consider which would be good.

Breeds that I wouldn't want -
Pomeranian,
Labrador
Beagle
Or any which are considered "Mutts" (awful category for non-pedigree dogs really...)

Anyway, all answers are appreciated. We have a decent sized house, not a large garden, a cat, and there's just me and Mum...
Am I not allowed to have an opinion on which type of dogs I prefer? I never said I don't like Mutts, I just said it's not a breed I would go for personally. I have nothing against them.

i have schnauzers. Theyre hypoallergenic, they dont shed, theyre very smart and easily trained, they like kids. The only negative about them is that theyre a little on the small size (miniature schnauzers, not standard) cuz i love big dogs. Other than that, i think theyre a pretty amazing breed! good luck in your search for the perfect companion. and schnauzers do really well as being inside dogs, only being let out to go to the bathroom. I have 3 and they never mess the house.
