Training Your Dog To Stop Barking
A dogs bark is an instinctive reaction, which may be caused by something he has seen, like a bird or ball, or by a noise, like a doorbell or a phone ringing. They will bark to defend their territory, or to show frustration or anxiousness. It could be an expression of their dominance, or simply a method of getting attention.

To try to eliminate your Dog Barking completely would be both difficult and slightly harsh on the dog - you don't prevent your children from showing excitment ! A much more advisable tactic is to gain total command of your dog, who will then be more likely to remain obedient to your commands to stop barking.
What you should do is create a situation when it would be acceptable for your dog to bark, such as when an intruder is trying to enter your propertry. Ask somebody to come over to your house to help, and ensure that there will not be any interruptions or distractions. Ensure your dog is relaxed, then ask your friend to try and get in through the window, or jump the fence into your garden - something unusual that a guest wouldn't do. Get your dog to start barking at the 'intruder' and use a phrase like 'bark' or 'who's there'. Now tell him in a calm tone to stop, with a phrase like 'shush'or 'be quiet', using the smell of a food treat to redirect his attention away from the intruder. As the barking stops, give him the food treat and praise him for his good behaviour.

Repeat this exercise over and over, and make sure that you have your dog remain calm and attentive a little longer each time before giving him his reward and praise. The aim is eventually to be able to cease your dogs barking on your command, and keep him calm and attentive for an extended period of time. Remain calm and cheerful when praising your dog, and he will interpret your mood as confirmation that his action was the correct one.
By practicing in a controlled environment, you will have a far better chance of keeping control of his barking when something unexpected triggers it in the future.
